Unfortunately, it is impossible to reliably identify by VIN which transfer case is installed on a car manufactured by the VAG concern. This caused by the fact that spare parts catalogs (ETKA) allow one to select a suitable spare part of the newest revision based on the VIN, but it does not contain information about what transfer case with which internals is installed on the car. With this in mind, if you intend to purchase spare parts specifically for your transmission, it is essential to identify it clearly. The identification is possible by knowing the OE number. The location of the number on the PL72 ATC and PL72 T transfer cases is shown in the illustration below.
